Cancer — groovy!

Hi Sweet,

You gotta hear this…

So there was this Greek god, Zeus was his name — real philanderer was he. Drove his wife Hera crazy. Craaaaazy. Murderously so. You can only imagine how batty she went when she found out that her husband had a love child. She wanted to kill both of them. But mostly the child. Hera — yeesh. What a monster. Well, luckily for the child, he was pretty much untouchable. He happened to be the strongest most beautiful kid in the world. His name was Hercules.

Imagine Hera’s delight when Hercules met up with some trouble all on his own battling a certain sea serpent.

Now here’s where it gets a little sad.

Hera saw the battle as an opportunity to get rid of Hercules for good. Only he wasn’t going down. So she sent someone in to help the sea serpent. And the someone she sent was her pet crab.

Yes, her faithful, valiant little Cancer. What was she thinking? Sure, Cancer made a wonderful domestic companion (although one can only imagine the challenges involved in potty training a crab) but did Hera really think she was going to pinch a big, strapping lovechild of the gods to death? Well, Cancer certainly tried. She pinched Hercules and she pinched him. But in the end the poor crustacean nipping at Hercules feet got trampled in the scuffle.

Hera, defeated and distraught, at least had the decency to honor the little crab by immortalizing her in the night sky. And there she remains to this very night.*

Now you might be wondering why I told you all of that, and I can’t say I blame you. Mind you, to understand this story’s significance, we have to look at it from the crab’s point of view. One day she was a lowly crustacean scuffling along the beach and the next she’s a house pet of gods, fighting their battles for them no less. And because of her ferocious sensitivity to the wounded feelings of her mistress, she’s given prime real estate in the sky where she shimmers on forever.

Anyway, the reason I bring it up is that I have a feeling that, like the little crab in the story, you are also quite loyal and sensitive to the feelings of others.

Some of my best friends are Cancer and I’m always struck by their magnificent intuition and their power to nurture and heal without saying a word. I also love the domestic magic Cancer so effortlessly weaves — you really know how to make yourself, and everyone else, feel at home don’t you? And boy can you throw a kickin’ party…

Next time, invite me!

Cosmically yours,

– Holiday
